Another Reason to Love Emperor X

If you have purchased a vinyl copy of The Blythe Archives Vol. 1, then you may have been aware of a geocaching exercise, a game in which Chad has hidden cassette tapes with extra material that become unlocked once the bounty has been uncovered.

Each volume of The Blythe Archives contains information which may be used to locate additional musical material cached throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Australia. The data range in form from etched GPS coordinates to lyrical pointers suggesting specific mass transit stations. At present, the approximate location ofeight caches are known, though it is likely that many more exist. Of these known eight caches, one has been found, one has likely been destroyed, and six remain buried.

The watertight caches contain original master cassette tapes and miscellaneous documents. These cassette tapes are the only extant physical copies of the music they contain. However, instructions accompanying each cache tell the finder how to unlock MP3 files stored in this online Georepository which contain all audio from the tapes. Once the MP3s are unlocked, the Georepository server will display links to these files in the space below for public download.

I’ll direct your attention to the Emperor X site which reveals the full story regarding the geocached cassette from Vol. 1. It has been found and mp3s are now available to the rest of the world. Congratulations to Tiel Reardon and Brent Karwatowski who were able to uncover this material.

Emperor X on Daytrotter

Emperor X stopped by Daytrotter for a session that has just been posted.

Matheny traverses some similar pathways that John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats has crossed over with his many records, but he takes more of an absurdist approach, a la Destroyer’s Dan Bejar, with his lyricism, instead of relying on the strained pain and interactions of Darnielle’s troubled male and female characters. –Sean Moeller, Daytrotter

He plays both “Hallelujah” and “Gamma-Globulin” from The Blythe Archives Vol. 1 one-sided LP. More will come soon, we promise…

Emperor X in Australia

I just dropped Chad from Emperor X off at LAX where he’s flying to Australia to tour with Adam Harding for two and a half weeks or so. Show dates have been added to the website.

Here’s a teaser video for the tour:
