Douglas Witmer : Recent Paintings, April 1-27, 2002
Reception: First Friday, April 5, 6:00-8:00 pm
The Peng Gallery presents recent work by Philadelphia artist Douglas Witmer. The exhibition runs from April 1-27, 2002, with a First Friday artist’s reception on April 5 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

Witmer’s large-scale works take their cues as much from early Renaissance devotional panels as they do from high Modernist color-field painting. Pared down to simple shapes, his abstract compositions create sensations of architectural spaces receding away from the viewer. They may evoke images such as rooms, doors, and stairs; or ideas of dwelling or passage. But through the choice of color and an emphasis on the physicality of contrasting surfaces, they are painted in such a way so as to make any illusion fail easily.

Despite their bold and sometimes imposing design, this flip-flopping spatial activity plays with the viewer’s perspective, inviting a process of inquiry into the nature and meaning of painted “reality.”

Douglas Witmer holds an M.F.A. from The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and a B.A. from Goshen (IN) College. In addition to the Academy, his work has recently been exhibited at Philadelphia’s Art in City Hall, Miami University of Ohio, the Allentown Art Museum, Lebanon Valley College, and the Central Market Gallery in Lancaster, PA.

The Peng Gallery is located at 35 South 3rd Street in Philadelphia, and shows work by international contemporary artists. It is open Fridays and Saturdays, 12-6 pm and by appointment.
