This record delivers. Speaking of top 10s, here’s my inevitable top 10 list for 2001: 1. The Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra and Tra-la-la Band : Born Into Trouble As The Sparks Fly Upwards (Constellation) This is the bleakest, most beautiful record from this Montreal collective, topping all previous releases from Godspeed You Black Emperor! of which this ensemble are all members. 2. Mogwai : Rock Action (Matador) Mogwai sings, plays beautifully. Sine Wave is the best introductory track of the year. Dave Fridman production. What more can you want?! 3. Low : Things we lost in the fire Their most beautiful release to date. It rocks hard, if that’s possible for Low, and then falls away into a perfect near-nothingness. Additionally, all orders over $30 will receive a free copy of Little Engines #2 (my treat) with their order, the fine journal of short stories released by our good friends at TNI Books. Denison Witmer will begin recording songs for his next release, Philadelphia Songs, in February in Philadelphia with Scott French who previously recorded the bonus tracks for the re-release of Safe Away. Denison will also be recording with Don and Karen Peris of the Innocence Mission for a Christmas album to be released in the fall of 2002. Denison will tour extensively in March with Six Parts Seven (Suicide Squeeze), so everyone outside of the Philadelphia/Lancaster area, look for those dates to be announced soon. Ester Drang will release a 7″ on Belgian vinyl label Zeal Records in the coming months. Zeal has released 7″ from Early Day Miners, Rothko, Hopewell, and Sybarite. Future 7″ include Explosions in the Sky, Sonna, and Unwed Sailor. Denison Witmer continues to tour in support of of joy & sorrow. Thanks to all of the fans who have been coming to the shows. Denison recently played two shows in Oklahoma with Ester Drang and is making his way across the south and then back up the east coast. Damien Jurado’s “four songs” one-sided LP has shipped from the factory and is expected to arrive this week. Damien will have the LPs on tour with him in November and will be performing at Bryn Mawr College near Philadelphia on 15 November. Jetenderpaul’s “Too Serious To Afford” 7″ is in Norway. I will be picking keppra online them up and bringing them to the US the second week in November. Mail orders will be filled until Friday 2 November and then not again until 19 November.
