I was in DC this weekend with Randall from the masterful Jetenderpaul, trying to eek out details about new recordings. There is one complete song and a few more in progress. He’s also working on a 7″ for Milk and Honey Records in Norway for his side project band The Shaker Manifesto. While waiting for Randall to hob nob with bow-tied historians, I visited the International Spy Museum which was a little too expensive and super crowded, but there were some nice exhibits. It kept me out of the cold. We did manage to work in some record shopping at a couple of stores. Arrangements are getting more and more final for Mara Miller to record her Bosque Brown album with Eric Fisher, Damien Jurado, and friends in Seattle. It’s looking more like a release for this Autumn. The Trouble with Sweeney are readying songs for a Spring single release that will be a preview for their Autumn full-length. Denison Witmer is talking recording time again, too, but no firm details yet. I’m off to Italy for a week on Friday night with a weekend stop in each direction in Amsterdam. Maybe I can escape the bitter cold that’s just…Continue reading

There’s snow on the ground here, about 6″ that fell Friday and Saturday. In the midst of some of the snowstorm, I was fostering my friendster addiction. Some big news…btv will be releasing the vinyl version of Sufjan Stevens’ new album “Seven Swans.” The release date for both the cd (on Sounds Familyre) and LP will be March 2004 and both will be distributed to stores by the fine folks at Secretly Canadian Distribution. Sufjan is finishing up the layout this morning. If you haven’t heard Sufjan’s album “Michigan,” you need to entertain thoughts of purchasing it. You can buy it from Asthmatic Kitty, Sounds Familyre, the btv online store, or your favorite local record shop. Ben from Kind of Like Spitting e-mailed and there are still plans for this one-sided LP to be released. More details when they’re ready. Artwork and audio is ready now for Aspera, Starflyer 59, and Ester Drang. Yume Bitsu is still simmering away, too. It will be a big time for one-sided LPs in the early ’04. One-sided LPs from Damien Jurado, The Six Parts Seven, and Early Day Miners are available now and are amazing. Damien and Eric Fisher are still planning to…Continue reading

I’m in the Chiangi airport in Singapore, surfing wireless, preparing to get back to the U.S.A. It’s been a long time coming. Goodbye to Justin and Sanna and all at work, including Jim who is a faithful update reader. I’m making a mad dash to get The Six Parts Seven one-sided LP ready for their Oct tour. Did I mention how hott this record is? I did, probably, many months ago. But, it is hott and you will love it. Some mastering/plating issues that we’re taking care of, but it will be worth the wait, well worth the wait. Starflyer 59 vinyl covers have been painted by our pal Jesse and the etching work is underway. The Ester Drang one-sided LP is also coming along, former member David Motter is designing the jackets. Stephen Drozd from the Flaming Lips plays on one of the tracks.
