Denison Witmer : Of Joy & Sorrow was #20 on the CMJ Add list. Thanks to all of the stations that are playing this cd. Our good friend Douglas Witmer (and brother of Denison) is an amazing painter: Douglas Witmer : Recent Paintings, April 1-27, 2002 Reception: First Friday, April 5, 6:00-8:00 pm The Peng Gallery presents recent work by Philadelphia artist Douglas Witmer. The exhibition runs from April 1-27, 2002, with a First Friday artist’s reception on April 5 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Witmer’s large-scale works take their cues as much from early Renaissance devotional panels as they do from high Modernist color-field painting. Pared down to simple shapes, his abstract compositions create sensations of architectural spaces receding away from the viewer. They may evoke images such as rooms, doors, and stairs; or ideas of dwelling or passage. But through the choice of color and an emphasis on the physicality of contrasting surfaces, they are painted in such a way so as to make any illusion fail easily. Despite their bold and sometimes imposing design, this flip-flopping spatial activity plays with the viewer’s perspective, inviting a process of inquiry into the nature and meaning of painted “reality.” Douglas…Continue reading

The Six Parts Seven are an amazing instrumental band on Seattle’s Suicide Squeeze record label. Treat yourself and go see the bands together on tour if you are able.
