Over the past 25 years,<br \/>\nthe Philly songwriter has become a staple of the city\u2019s music and literary scenes&#8230; he got his start as an award-winning<br \/>\nmusic critic, before eventually fronting influential Philly bands like <strong>The Trouble With Sweeney<\/strong> and <strong>The Barnabys<\/strong>, as well<br \/>\nas recording and performing as a solo artist.<\/p>\n<p>Produced by <strong>Ray Ketchem<\/strong> (<strong>Guided By Voices<\/strong>, <strong>Luna<\/strong>), <em>Catholic School<\/em> is album is so steeped in dad-rock influences<br \/>\n(and lots of sax) that it\u2019s wearing a Members Only jacket and trying to get a job working for the city. It\u2019s also an album very<br \/>\nmuch about cities, and the way Sweeney&#8217;s city or your city is changing. You could say the city is the central character, but<br \/>\nthere\u2019s also much about hope, falling in and out of love, being with your friends and not being with your friends&#8230; all set<br \/>\nagainst the backdrop of looking for some kind of grace while down the street, they\u2019re tearing the old church down.<\/p>\n<p>Sweeney&#8217;s new songs, which he\u2019s been trickling out over the past year, draw inspiration from sources as disparate as 1970s<br \/>\nPhilly nightlife and Denis Johnson\u2019s <em>The Incognito Lounge<\/em>.
