I’m in the Chiangi airport in Singapore, surfing wireless, preparing to get back to the U.S.A. It’s been a long time coming. Goodbye to Justin and Sanna and all at work, including Jim who is a faithful update reader.
I’m making a mad dash to get The Six Parts Seven one-sided LP ready for their Oct tour. Did I mention how hott this record is? I did, probably, many months ago. But, it is hott and you will love it. Some mastering/plating issues that we’re taking care of, but it will be worth the wait, well worth the wait. Starflyer 59 vinyl covers have been painted by our pal Jesse and the etching work is underway. The Ester Drang one-sided LP is also coming along, former member David Motter is designing the jackets. Stephen Drozd from the Flaming Lips plays on one of the tracks.

I’m chatting a lot to get the recording dates set for Bosque Brown and it’s looking more like December. Hoping for a Spring 2004 release for her record and Eric Fisher/Damien Jurado will be at the recording helm. Hoping to get the cover art for Damien’s This Fabulous Century before Eric goes on tour with Rosie Thomas. Maybe this LP only release will surface in late 2003…
As El said, the monkey has left the daycare?
California, here I come…

Unwed Sailor : The Marionette and The Music Box hardbound books are on their way from Iceland to the US. Should be here in a week or two and then out to everyone who pre-ordered.
Lacquers for Starflyer 59 : Old 2×10″ are on their way to the factory and plates for Starflyer 59′s one-sided LP, Portuguese Blues, should have arrived. Portuguese Blues is a return to some older guitar riff intensive days, but with a little dirty blues sound mixed in. These should be out in the relatively near future, perhaps sooner than expected, possibly early July. Covers for Early Day Miners : Deep Harbor one-sided LP and The Six Parts Seven : The Attitudes of Collapse one-sided LP are getting printed and the vinyl should be underway, as well. These should be ready sometime in June. Saxon Shore : Four Months of Darkness LPs will be here soon, test pressings are on their way. The Trouble with Sweeney : I Know You Destroy! vinyl has been delayed due to cover image resolution issues, but these should be solved shortly. Busy times for vinyl releases here at the label. We’re earning the middle name we so desparately want to keep.
I was at Four Tet, Manitoba, and Prefuse 73. I went to see Four Tet which didn’t translate as well as I’d hope to the live set, but Manitoba was completely impressive, as was Prefuse 73. Good times, but not as good as the time Dryw was having…
Colin, Dave, and I are sorting out a return trip to Los Angeles, hopefully after I’m back for a work trip to France.
Farewell to Justin Kay as he wanders across the US. Yes, this is a blog…

I’m in Los Angeles at the moment and things are very busy and happening. I’m staying with my friends Mike and Elisabeth who live near the ocean in Venice Beach. Their friend James was visiting and they’ve been editing an independent movie that they filmed last year. Last night, we had an outdoor barbeque, went to some super underground improve comedy thing, a midnight showing of Trilogy of Terror with a short talk back featuring actress Karen Black, and then a 3am visit to Rocoe’s Chicken and Waffles offering the best in, well, chicken and waffle combinations.
We’ve been visiting quite a few other strange spots, includnig Randy’s Donuts, a donut stand with a gigantic donut on the roof that can occassionally be seen in movies.
I’m off to San Francisco for a few days tomorrow. I’m going to see a baseball game on Tuesday with Jamie Hunt, who did the paintings for Unwed Sailor’s The Marionette and The Music Box, and my old friend John who went to my high school. Should be exciting times ahead.
In one-sided LP news, both Early Day Miners and The Six Part Seven are being pressed and printed while we speak. Starflyer 59 have completed the audio for their release to be entitled Portuguese Blues that features a slight return to the gritty guitar rock days of old. Mount Eerie will begin working on a one-sided LP in July, tentatively, for a late autumn/early winter 2003 release.
