Mara Miller’s grandparents have lived for more than 50 years in their house on Cerro Verde in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, near Biloxi. During Hurricane Katrina, her grandparents attempted to weather the storm, but escaped when the flood waters rose. A nearby neighbor with a second story let them stay in their house after they fled theirs. Her grandparents and the home survived, but the repairs are still ongoing.

Bosque Brown’s Cerro Verde one-sided LP frames four songs about the home and family memories and issues brought to the surface as the flood waters rose. In the uncertainty after the hurricane, the family lost contact with the grandparents and led Mara and the others to both worry and reminisce. As with any family that has been tied to one location for so long, the house became associated with many events and memories, both good and bad. The frenzy of hurricane, missing grandparents, and the house introduce the story, the door transitioning from physical house and opening to memory. The record closes with the letting go of tragic memories held in the house, symbolically washed away with the flooding: “flood within flows out the pain, let it rain and rain.”

The front and back covers show Mara repairing furniture miniatures from a dollhouse her grandfather made against a backdrop of wallpaper from her grandparent’s house. Mara and her sister Gina played with that dollhouse as children, just like her mother and mother’s sisters did. Most of the furniture was ruined during the flood and what remains needs to be repaired. The images are carried through to the B side etching and are accompanied by a poem her grandmother wrote for Mara. Mara’s grandmother often wrote poems on special paper with some accompanied embellishments and these framed poems were in the house on Cerro Verde.

The album was recorded in Denton, Texas at the Echo Lab with Matt Pence (Centro-Matic) without any digital intervention. The songs were tracked to 1/2″ tape and transferred to the lacquer for LP manufacturing. The cd is included for portability and is the digital “safety” copy in case the analog master tape was damaged. The four songs feature only Mara Miller’s signature vocals and sparse acoustic guitar tracks.

Though both Cerro Verde and Bosque Brown Plays Mara Lee Miller are basically solo affairs, Bosque Brown has blossomed into a full band. Their live show has become a local staple in the their hometown, taking the Dallas/Ft. Worth/Denton, Texas area by storm. Bosque Brown Plays Mara Lee Miller was chosen as the top local release of 2005 by the Dallas Observer and the band has grown in popularity. They were also nominated for four Dallas Observer Music Awards including best song, best new act, best female singer, and best folk/acoustic performer. They’ve headlined their own shows and have played with Two Gallants, John Vanderslice, Will Johnson, Bobby Bare Junior, Damien Jurado, and The National, and has most recently been asked to perform among respected Texas songwriters Billy Joe Shaver and Ray Wylie Hubbard.

Efterklang’s incredible 2004 full-length Tripper (The Leaf Label, UK) was among my favorite releases of that year. My Danish friend posted their debut EP Springer on a shared ftp server since it was sold out and only available in Denmark initially. (We’re big supporters of file sharing at Burnt Toast Vinyl which resulted in the Mt. Eerie : Live in Copenhagen 3xLP collaboration between btv and Denmark’s Washington Inc.) Soon after, I invited Efterklang to do a one-sided LP and we worked out the details over the course of the year. Of the three tracks on One-Sided LP, one features Efterklang collaborating with famed Danish singer Martin Hall who provides the vocals for “Tu Es Mon Image” and another features Edda Rún Ólafsdóttir and Hildur Àrsælsdóttir from Amiina as guest musicians. The LP jacket features a faraway portrait of the band in keeping with the portrait theme for cover artwork in the Burnt Toast Vinyl one-sided LP series. Efterklang’s One-Sided LP is the latest in a series which includes Damien Jurado, Early Day Miners, The Six Parts Seven, Yume Bitsu, Ester Drang, Mt. Eerie, Starflyer 59, June Panic, Aspera, and Bosque Brown.

The Danish ensemble Efterklang was formed in January 2001. The following year and a half saw its founding core members Mads Brauer, Casper Clausen, Thomas Husmer, Rune Mølgaard and Rasmus Stolberg develop Efterklang into what it is today.

The film-maker Karim Ghahwagi joined the ensemble in the beginning of 2003 and accompanied the band’s well received debut EP Springer with extensive video collage work. Springer was released on Efterklang’s own label Rumraket and came packaged in white fake fur in only 500 copies. The band played their first live shows in Denmark in the spring of 2003 bringing audiences a subtle blend of acoustics, electronics and video imagery.

The development of Efterklang’s first full length studio album Tripper began in the fall of 2003 in the band’s own recording studio in the heart of Copenhagen and incorporated violins, brass instruments, a Greenlandic choir and a fully integrated video collage score. 34 guest musicians played on the recordings of Tripper among them Hildur Àrsælsdóttir and Edda Rún Olafsdóttir from the Icelandic string quartet Amiina who is known for their extraordinary work with Sigur Rós.

In July 2004, Efterklang signed to The Leaf Label (UK). In October, Tripper was released in USA, Canada, Europe, Japan, China, Australia and South Africa. Tripper became the fastest selling debut record in Leaf’s 10 year history. It has received remarkable good reviews and airplay on radio stations across North America and Europe. The Guardian wrote “this is the album to spend your tokens on. Five stars.” Pitchfork rated it 7.9 and wrote “Astonishing… this music should continue to reverberate in your memory for a long time to come.” In late 2004, the MTV program This is Our Music did a 30 minute documentary on Efterklang.

In February 2005, the song “Swarming” taken from Tripper was released as a radio and iTunes single with remixes including one by Bjørk producer Thomas Knak aka Opiate and a music video by Karim Ghahwagi. In April 2005, the debut Springer EP (2003) was re-released by The Leaf Label worldwide on cd and vinyl. Efterklang toured throughout Europe as an 8 piece band with performances at several high profile summer festivals including Roskilde, Hultsfred, Quart, Sonar and The Big Chill. Efterklang plan to tour the US in winter 2006/2007 in support of their forthcoming full-length.

Denison Witmer’s debut album, Safe Away, was recorded in the fall of 1997 with Don Peris (The Innocence Mission) who produced the album and played guitar on many of the album’s simple tracks. Many of these songs were written on an extended trip to Japan during 1996 and 1997 as reflections on many of his experiences and relationships both in Japan and at home. These are heartfelt, deeply emotional and sincere songs of love and broken hearts.

The songs of Safe Away are stripped down, but remain lush and powerful, akin to Mark Kozelek, Harvest-era Neil Young, or Nick Drake, but still unique in their own right. Safe Away is a simply recorded album capturing an airy intimacy and beauty. These recordings remain a favorite of Witmer’s growing fan base.

Witmer originally released Safe Away independently in the early winter of 1998. The album sold quickly through Denison’s touring efforts and went out-of-print. Witmerenlisted the help of his friend Scott French to record two additional songs to add to the album. The additional tracks were captured to 8-track cassette, showcasing the simple beauty of Witmer’s craft.

Denison and Burnt Toast Vinyl’s Scott Hatch met in the fall of 1997 when Hatch did the design for his original self-released edition of Safe AwayWitmer and Hatch became fast friends. Denison also became the building block for Burnt Toast Vinyl: the first artist to tour nationally, the driving force for growing promotion and publicity, and one of the best selling releases. Denison released three full-lengths (Safe Away, Of Joy and Sorrow, Philadelphia Songs), 2 eps (River BendsThe ‘80s), and a live record on Burnt Toast Vinyl. The btv version of Witmer’Safe Away went out of print in cd near the end of 2004. Now, Burnt Toast Vinyl is now proud to issue Safe Away as a special edition 180g virgin vinyl LP. The sparse, yet beautiful recordings sound phenomenal in the deluxe vinyl format.

The Burnt Toast Vinyl/Denison Witmer connection remains strong. He’s toured on several occasions with bands on the label and members of Saxon Shore back him on live tracks on a double cd re-issue of Safe Away released through The Militia Group in late fall 2006, the label that released Denison‘s latest album, Are You a Dreamer?Denison has also recorded with Rosie Thomas and Sufjan Stevens for Rosie’s latest full-length These Friends of Mine. The association with Stevens also provided a perfect opportunity for jokesters Witmer and Thomas to spoof venerable online music magazine Pitchfork into thinking the sessions also spawned a Thomas-Stevens love child.

Denison Witmer has shared the stage with many musicians such as My Morning Jacket, Sufjan Stevens, Joanna Newsom, Anathallo, Saxon Shore, Richard Buckner, Don Peris, The Innocence Mission, Damien Jurado, and Pedro the Lion. He has toured extensively throughout North America and Europe over his career and his Philadelphia Songs and Are You a Dreamer? were both released in Europe by Sweden’s Bad Taste Records.
